Raw Superfood Smoothie


Lately, I have been very intrigued by the idea of a raw diet. Being a virgo, I have always been inclined to find healthy ways of living and eating. This year especially, it has become more prominent in Akshara’s and my life. We have both been experiencing the effects of the standard diet, and no matter how much we try to fit into it, it just doesn’t resonate. We are often feeling sick, tired, sluggish and foggy in our thoughts and energy levels. We know it is a direct effect of what we put in our bodies, as we truly are what we eat. Every cell in our bodies are made up of what we feed them. We realized it is more than ever, time to make a shift and give our bodies what they need ~ healthy food which supports life.

We have added a lot of fresh juices the past few years, which has been very rejuvenating and cleansing. I can feel the energy from this and it has been wonderful. The benefit of juicing is that it bypasses the digestive phase and the beneficial nutrients can easily enter the body stream, feeding the cells within minutes. As my body started adapting to this shift, I started to desire to add even more to this juicing routine. I then began looking into the raw food diet. Yet, after reading through many cookbooks on the subject, I was a bit discouraged because most of the recipes require rare and costly ingredients. It seems that, unless one lives near a coconut tree or in a tropical location, it is nearly impossible to make most of the recipes.

As I was recently researching into ways to make this diet work, I came across a video in which raw food pioneer, David Wolfe, was sharing his ultimate smoothie recipe. As he was making the smoothie, he talked about each ingredient in a way that made me want to learn more and got me excited to try it. Many of the ingredients were known as superfoods; foods that pack so much nutrition, one could probably live on them alone. He shared that he had lived on this smoothie for months without any solid food. I can believe it, after seeing what foods went into it. He spoke of the energy he felt and continues to feel as he eats a superfood and raw food diet. He said he got to a very high level of energy and awareness, in which he felt as if he would crash at some point, similar to how one feels when stimulated and then get really drained and tired. Yet, he said this was different. He never experienced the crash. He continues to be vibrant, energetic, creative and aligned with life. I was truly inspired. This seemed to be just what we were looking for- something nutritious, easy to make and delicious.

The smoothie recipe David shared had some ingredients that I either couldn’t find or didn’t resonate with us, so I have adapted the recipe to fit our needs and tastes.

Raw Superfood Smoothie
2.5 cups of water
1 banana
1/4 cup raw cashews
1/4 cup raw almonds
2 tsp spirulina
1 tsp Organic India turmeric powder
1/2 tsp Organic India Ashwagandha
1 tsp maca
1/4 cup goji berries
1 scoop of Sambazon acai powder
2 Tbsp raw cacao powder
2 cacao beans or 1 Tbsp nibs
2 Tbsp hempseeds
1 Tbsp chia seeds
1 tsp ground flax seeds
1 Tbsp flax oil
8 drops of liquid Vit D
1 Tbsp aloe vera gel
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
4-5 cubes of ice
Serves 2
Blend and enjoy!

This smoothie tastes like “cold hot chocolate” according to Akshara. The herbs have a unique taste and you may adjust them as desired.

As we return to a diet which supports life, we begin to resonate with our true nature and can more easily align with our highest potential. Food truly can be our medicine.
